Muslim Representation in Comics

  • Panel Room 2 Queen's Suite Harrogate Convention Centre (map)

Over the past few years there has been a notable shift in the representation of Muslims in popular culture, and the medium of comics is no different. There are more stories being told, more diversity in the people telling them and the people represented in them. In this panel we will be discussing what inspires creators to share their stories, their experience of instant response from fans and readers, as well as coming to terms with the wider impact of representing Muslims in this medium, given the current socio-political climate.

Hosted by PhD Candidate Meher Shiblee, whose research focus is 21st Century Muslim Superheroines and Issues of Representation in Comics, who is joined by comic creators Shazleen Khan, Sabba Khan, Ahmed Raafat and Ny Ali.
